Nordic Storage Investments could be Boosted by Vendor Initiatives, Says IDC

Most Nordic companies have some kind of storage solution in place and primarily invest further on a need-to-have basis. Nonetheless, IDC believes there are compelling arguments that vendors can use to rapidly increase sales.

Following a couple of years of decline, the Nordic storage market is now expected to recover. The recent IDC study, Nordic Enterprise Survey: Beyond Basic Backup, supports this assumption and furthermore points to the most promising technologies and segments and thoroughly analyzes market drivers.

One of the primary findings is that most companies invest in storage solutions based on short-term criteria, mainly expanding the existing solution with more capacity, for example additional disk space or new removable drives and media that hold more data. However, almost as important is the desire for utilizing the existing data better or more efficiently. Increased speed/performance, ease-of-use, and data accessibility are also very important market drivers, and, unlike the first set, vendors can actively use these as means of pushing new solutions and technologies into the market. At the same time a vendor can position itself, as there is no storage supplier that has managed to stand out and is both well known and positively perceived in terms of storage solutions in particular.

IDC´s survey also reveals immense differences between segments — some of which are far from obvious. The common way of dividing the market into enterprise and SMB segments is not appropriate, as the way of thinking of storage differs far more across industries and even country borders than across company sizes.
