Second Wave of Wireless LAN Rolling Out in the Nordic Region, Says IDC
The second wave of wireless LAN solutions is slowly beginning to roll out. WLAN is becoming a naturally integrated part of the enterprise IT infrastructure, and focus is moving from a technological focus where processes remain unchanged using a different technology, into a new focus on business advantages supported by the wireless opportunities.
At the same time, the number of public hotspots continues to grow, supported by the signing of roaming agreements between operators and by the increasing number of wireless devices.
"Wireless is moving away from the hype and into a position as one of several technologies supporting the mobile enterprises," said Nordic Research Manager Karsten Fogh Ho-Lanng, IDC. "At the same time, wireless technologies enable new ways of doing business, such as retail stores supporting campaigns with mobile cash desks, universities moving education out of the lecture halls or process manufacturers improving assembly lines with wireless components."
IDC expects growth in the WLAN market client equipment shipments varying from 28.2% in Sweden to an impressive 40.6% in Finland. Access point growth is expected to be even higher, varying from 42.8% in Denmark to 50.2% in Finland.
The market change makes room for a number of suppliers with other competencies than the strictly technological competencies that have been ruling the markets until now; there is now a market for companies that are able to deliver both the technical installation and business advice on how to take advantage of the new technology.
The results of IDC´s research are presented in Nordic WLAN and Hotspots Market: Nordic Leading the Game (Doc #N510520M). For information on how to purchase this study, please contact your local IDC office or visit www.idc.com.
