Major Changes to Disrupt the Business Intelligence Arena in Leading Nordic Market, Says IDC
According to IDC, the Nordic business intelligence (BI) market is on the verge of a significant paradigm shift following the focused entrance of enterprise resource planning (ERP) vendors on the BI market. The Nordic countries are early adopters of BI applications and the first signs of future trends are usually detected here.
"Nordic enterprises emphasize transparency in the organization and are willing to adapt quickly to changes in the business ecosystem," said Brian Troelsen, an IDC senior analyst. "Hence the need for BI applications is evident as enterprises require reliable and timely data including information on customer movement, transactions, and competitive performance. Meanwhile, many enterprises are focused on consolidating their software applications to include the BI platform due to cost savings considerations. This opens a strategic window for BI vendors that are able to supply an enterprisewide BI system while also being price competitive."
Such price-competitive vendors are coming from the ERP area. The entrance of ERP-based vendors will cause increased pressure on prices — severely impacting established players. These established players may still control the majority of the market, but that could quickly change if they don´t respond to the threat from the likes of Microsoft and SAP. Microsoft recently announced major BI contract wins for large accounts, despite the fact that it was initially believed Microsoft would focus on small and medium-sized accounts. Likewise, SAP is disrupting the market with its offerings embedded in the SAP system.
"It is vital, however, for the customer to look not only at the price of the license, but also at costs related to training and consultancy," said Troelsen.
