Game Research: Pro Gamers - Fragging for a living

A massive amount of ’work’ is demanded from professional computer gamers. But the pay-off is great – the chance to make a living by playing games.

In the last years we have seen an increasing focus on professional aspects of computer gaming. The tables have yet to turn – we don’t yet get to watch high-profile Counter-Strike matches on national television – but the potential is piling up.

In a recent survey at www.game-research.com, pro gamers reported spending an average of 27 hours a week on gaming. Cut down on your practice and other gamers will eagerly take your place.

Interestingly a huge majority of all those who took the survey are open to the idea of watching important game matches on television. Game Research foresees a whole new market area appearing with important challenges for game developers, broadcasters , tournament managers and marketing professionals.

A transition from subcultural phenomenon to mainstream is never without victims or disagreement. In the time to come much will depend on how well new market players understand the gamers that they are dealing with. They need to understand team and clan dynamics as well as games themselves. For instance, the respondents in the Game Research survey largely agreed as to which games should be turned into spectator sports and which should not .

Those who meet these challenges will be able to gain a secure foothold in an area about to grow explosively.

Game Research has just published a report on Pro Gamers with a focus on gamer habits and business issues .
