Large Systems Integrators Fight Fiercely for a Small Share of the Danish Market, Says IDC

After some slow years Danish companies are now investing heavily in IT solutions that create efficiency in company processes. As a result, the market for solutions in finance management, HR management, supply chain management, and customer relationship management reached almost DKK 7 billion, including both software and services in 2003, according to new research published by IDC. IDC forecasts that investment will grow to reach DKK 11 billion in 2008.

Danish enterprises have invested in these solutions in previous years, and it is now time for second- or third-generation solutions providing better integration and including more business processes.

"The market is highly fragmented, both on the software and the services side," said IDC Nordic Consulting Manager Mette Ahorlu. "Business suites are gaining ground at the expense of discrete solutions, but this is not a very fast process. SAP and Microsoft in particular are doing well, but there are lots of niches for other solutions."

A solution is much more than software, however. In fact, two-thirds of a solution are implementation, adaptations to customer needs, integration with other solutions, migration of data, application hosting, and application management. And the fragmentation of services market is even greater, with the top 10 systems integrators sharing only 40% of the market.

"There is a clear trend for the large systems integrators to fight fiercely for a small share of the market," said Ahorlu. "Most of the large, well-known systems integrators focus on SAP, but although SAP is gaining ground it is far from erasing all other solutions. IDC believes that these solutions providers will have to focus much more on integration and on projects with a high return on investment within a short period. Systems integrators will have to differentiate themselves much clearer in the market with their services offerings. The opportunities are clearly there."
