Gigabit Ethernet Sales Outpace Fast Ethernet LAN Switches for the First Time in EMEA in 1Q04, Says IDC
First-quarter results from IDC´s EMEA LAN Switch Tracker show that, for the first time ever, sales of gigabit Ethernet LAN switches exceeded those of fast Ethernet LAN switches. Overall, the LAN switch market in EMEA grew 14% to reach a total of 17.3 million ports, compared with 15.2 million in 4Q03. Revenue increased sharply (21.5%) to $1.2 billion in 1Q04, fueled by an increase in the average selling price (ASP) and strong demand for gigabit Ethernet LAN switches. For the quarter, gigabit Ethernet port shipments increased 61.1% while revenue grew 37.5%, accounting for 52.3% of all revenue compared with 46.2% in 4Q03. The largest vendor measured in revenue in 1Q04 was Cisco, followed by HP, 3Com, Nortel, and D-Link.
"The adoption of gigabit Ethernet by enterprises has been really phenomenal and as vendors continue to expand their gigabit Ethernet LAN switch portfolio, IDC expects that this segment will continue to enjoy double-digit growth in the coming quarters," said Peter Hulleman, senior research analyst with IDC´s European Telecommunications and Networking group.
