Allied Telesyn multiplies capacity with Lightexplorer optical transport platform

CWDM Enables High-Bandwidth IP Video, Voice And Data Services Over A Single Fibre Pair.

Allied Telesyn, a global provider of end-to-end Ethernet/IP products today announced the availability of its LightExplorer(tm) AT-LX3800U optical transport platform. This modular Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM) solution is capable of transporting multiple, dissimilar services each up to 2.7Gbps, with a combined maximum bandwidth exceeding 20Gbps, across a single fibre pair at distances up to 80km. The platform also has Integrated SNMP management, a comprehensive alarm/event log and hot-swappable line cards and power supplies for high-system availability.

Finnish service provider, Kymen Puhelin employs over 160 people and is a local telephone company in South Eastern Finland providing telephone, Internet, mobile phone and cable TV services. Kotka has a direct connection to the Finnish Internet Exchange (Ficix) in Helsinki through Finnet national provider, all of which runs over Allied Telesyn´s CWDM platform.

- We have been using an Allied Telesyn CWDM solution without any down time, between the 148 kilometer line from Kotka to Helsinki for some time now and we have seen a substantial cost saving in the process, explained Kotka Telephone Manager of Production Networks Vesa Kankare.- We have worked with Allied Telesyn since the late 1980´s and have always been impressed by the reliability of its products and solutions.

Ideal for carriers, large enterprises, ministry of defence implementations and governments whose applications require expanded services over limited fibre, the small physical size 1RU chassis, 8-slot LightExplorer is a scalable, innovative solution. The hot-swappable, modular line-card design allows easy expansion and migration as required, providing extremely linear CAPEX investment. With multi-service transport up to 80km and the ability to accommodate multiple services and protocols within a single fibre pair, the LightExplorer reduces both up-front costs and long-term Total Cost of Ownership (TCO). Each line card is capable of speeds from 100Mbps through 2.7Gbps and may use speed-specific or multi-rate SFP transceivers.

- It simplifies the network. It increases capacity. It limits costs," says Allied Telesyn´s Product Marketing Europe VP Melvyn Wray.- CWDM is the best way to extend the life of a network exponentially. LightExplorer adds modularity and flexibility to that mix, because it supports legacy protocols at the same time as it helps you to transition to an end-to-end IP network - all over a single fibre pair.

In the LAN environment, Allied Telesyn CWDM solutions provide the ability to extend the life of existing switches, routers and other networking equipment, by segmenting the network into smaller workgroups and allowing for new services to be added. Each workgroup´s traffic is carried on the existing fibre infrastructure, to the central core network and servers. In addition, the LightExplorer can reduce lease fibre dependency and give more control of bandwidth growth to the network administrator.

Currently available for order, the Light Explorer AT-LX3800U chassis has a list price of US$5,395 (EUR4,240). AT-LX3811 line cards have a list price of US$3,295 (EUR2,590).
