Nordic Commercial PC Market Has Peaked, Says IDC
Following nearly two years of recovery and continuously strong performance, the commercial PC market is now slowing down and heading for decline.
Overspending before the millennium change and the subsequent burst of the dot-com bubble have resulted in a slowdown of Nordic IT markets in general and the PC market in particular. 2000 to 2002 were characterized by declining PC shipments to the commercial segments, and looking at market value the picture was even worse.
During the summer of 2003, however, the market returned to positive growth, and for more than a year displayed double-digit growth. The market has been driven by pent-up demand and a rapidly increasing interest in portable PCs as mobility becomes ever more important to companies; in just two years the share of portable PCs has grown from 30% to 40%.
However, in the last few quarters, Nordic businesses have lowered their interest in buying PCs and the growth rate has dropped significantly. IDC expects that the trend will continue throughout the year and a new decline is expected in 2006. As the PC market is extremely mature it has become highly cyclical, as replacements need to be made every three to four years. Therefore, the market will return to growth in a few years, but the slowdown beforehand will put further pressure on the already demanding market and challenge both vendors and resellers.
