convertassist.com launches a new, free online service as a one-stop site for any conversion needs

Convert Assist (www.convertassist.com) launches a new, free online service as a one-stop site for any conversion needs. Its purpose is to simplify the needs of travelers for currency conversion, global time, clothing sizes, and translation and pronunciation of words and text. Additionally, the site offers general web users file conversion, video resizing (from a file or a website like YouTube) for mobile or PDA, photo resizing and digital art, Roman numeral converter, ZIP code finder and maps, etc. The service combines technologies like Java, JavaScript, Flash and PHP to deliver the best possible user experience and is available in English and Spanish for the time being. Some services have been developed totally within the site while others are conveniently linked to the best service found on the web for each tool.

Rogelio Triviño, the website’s creator, talks about the future: "Right now we’re working on gaining visibility and traffic so more users can try the service and provide feedback. Based on that feedback, we’re going to work on expanding our available tools and languages. We are developing an easy yet powerful interface so many people can use it and discover new applications that they’d never even thought of. Convert Assist is a useful source of free online programs for every web browser and OS without any downloads or installation – it just needs a few common plug-ins installed like Java or Flash. This is a step beyond other software distribution models, recognizing that it’s not enough to simply be free, but it must also be easy to get, to use and to keep up-to-date. This is a path pioneered by open source software (General Public License – GPL) and currently sponsored by Google, with an increasing number of free online services and more multiplatform and free programs to download every day (Picasa, Google Earth, etc.). That software is great but it’s overkill when you just need a tweak, a piece of data, a calculation, or the occasional conversion; this is just the niche this service is intended for.
