Surrey Sports Park set to launch „Summer of Sport“

Fresh from their successful opening earlier this month, Surrey Sports Park has today (11 May) announced details of the launch of their ‘Summer of Sport’ with a free, family fun day on Saturday 29 May. The open day will see a host of local and national sports stars take part in a series of celebratory exhibition events and free coaching clinics, including top British swimmer, Mark Foster.

A number of celebrity events have already been confirmed for the day, including Mark Foster attempting to set the fastest 50m lap in the new swimming pool and swimming coaching clinics with Foster and local swimming club Guildford City.

Other highlights of the launch day are also set to include basketball workshops with local BBL side Guildford Heat, netball workshops with CNSL playoff contenders Surrey Storm, freestyle football, basketball and world record attempts with Dan Magness and Tommy Baker, and badminton coaching sessions with Olympic Silver and World Championship Gold medal winning badminton player, Gail Emms.

Alongside this star-studded line-up, Saturday 29 May will see Surrey Sports Park open its doors to everyone to come and take a look at their impressive new facilities and take part in a number of free activities, classes and workshops. Attendees on the day will be able to try and take part in a number of different sports including tennis, climbing, swimming, squash, badminton, basketball, netball, football and more. A variety of free drop-in taster group fitness, dance and well-being classes will also be on offer for people to participate in, allowing everyone a free opportunity to try Surrey Sports Park’s new facilities first-hand.

The Saturday 29 May open day will officially launch Surrey Sports Park’s ‘Summer of Sport’ which sees the Sports Park host a number of major sporting events and teams over the months of June, July and August.. These events include the 2010 Women’s Rugby World Cup which is set to take place between 16 August - 06 September. The tournament will see12 international teams spend three weeks living, training and performing at the venue, with 26 matches scheduled to be played in total.

Jason Harborow, Chief Executive of Surrey Sports Park, is keen for everyone to come and experience what the new complex has to offer on the day and help celebrate the centre’s opening and the launch of the Summer of Sport alongside a host of leading sports stars: “The launch day is a great opportunity for everyone in the local area to get together to celebrate the opening of Surrey Sports Park and take part in a great line-up of sporting activities, action and events. We have already built a number of friends in professional sport who are keen to put on some world-class sporting entertainment on the day and lend their expertise in a fun, family-friendly environment. The day is a great opportunity to showcase what our facilities have to offer, and I encourage you all to come down, have some fun, rub shoulders with sporting greats and try something new."

More details of the launch day for Surrey Sports Park’s Summer of Sport are set to be announced later this month. The day is free for everyone to attend, and although a number of drop-in activities and free to watch exhibitions will be available, some sessions may require pre-booking.
