Team KCAP wins first prize in FredericiaC competition
FredericiaC has now published the jury report on the four competition proposals for a development plan for Fredericia’s new town district. The jury is very pleased with the four strong proposals, but highlights Team KCAP for its coherent and carefully prepared physical and structural plan.
“We have four proposals that – in diversity and variation – elegantly provide good and applicable solutions, recommendations and ideas for how our vision can be translated into a robust and sustainable development plan that meets the intentions of the partnership."
That was the conclusion drawn by jury chairman Lars Holten when the results of the FredericiaC competition were published Thursday afternoon. Mayor Thomas Banke is also pleased with the quality of the proposals.
“The four proposals are very much in keeping with the local council’s high level of ambition for the Fredericia of tomorrow."
The jury highlights Team KCAP’s proposal as the best proposal overall for a development plan for the new town district. Team KCAP’s proposal is particularly highlighted for its coherent and carefully prepared physical and structural plan, which, springing from historical considerations about Fredericia’s urban construction, has proposed a canal structure and a pronounced urbanism as the key means for a robust development strategy for FredericiaC. Team KCAP, consisting of Dutch architects KCAP, Rambøll UK and DK and Dutch research firm Facton, wins the first prize of EUR 40,000 for its proposal.
Second prize sharedTeam Arup and Team Vandkunsten share the second prize, each receiving EUR 25,000 for their proposals.
The jury singles out Team Arup’s urban strategy and process-oriented recommendations for how to form the Fredericia of the future through active participation and co-ownership to specific action-oriented means such as local food production and sustainable energy solutions. Team Vandkunsten is singled out for its precise decoding of the urban construction and the history of the town of Fredericia and the ability to transform this into the coming urban structure down to a scale that supports and assists urban life. Furthermore, it is a highly competent bid for how to tie retail trade together with the retail trade of the existing town.
The third prize of EUR 10,000 goes to Team Adept for its specific proposal for solutions and means for urban construction and sustainability. The jury particularly stresses Team Adept’s proposal for mini academies, water staircases and pockets along the water.
Sustainable urban developmentThe jury is also very pleased with the many fine proposals of the teams for how to lower energy consumption, supply the new town district with renewable energy and, as far as possible, handle contaminated soil on the site. The proposals to establish a green rampart facing towards Shell are also convincing.
“The teams’ solutions to the soil contamination and risk conditions confirm our opinion that the continued development of FredericiaC can become an example of how such special environmental problems can be addressed in sound harmony with modern urban construction," says Mette Lis Andersen, CEO of Realdania By.
FredericiaC goes on with the development planThe intention of the international parallel competition has been to inspire FredericiaC, and so FredericiaC will now go on with the final development plan where input and inspiration from the four proposals will form part of deliberations. This work will start immediately after the end of the competition and end in early 2012.
“The competition and the results provide the optimum foundation for preparing the actual development plan. It will be an exciting challenge for us to determine in detail how we continue with the myriad good elements and ideas from the proposals," says Jens Christensen, project director.
Throughout the entire competition and the evaluation process, citizens and stakeholders have had the opportunity to comment on the proposals – at public meetings, exhibitions of competition proposals, in FredericiaC’s Dialogue Forum and in connection with special exhibitions for stakeholders. The involvement of citizens and stakeholders continues throughout the process of preparing the final development plan. The exhibition of the proposals runs until 30 May, and FredericiaC encourages everyone to comment on the report and come up with proposals for preparing the final development via the Dialogue Forum.
The jury report and a summary of it are available for download on www.FredericiaC.dk, as are the four competition proposals.

As part of its evaluation, the jury was advised by particularly appointed experts.
About the competitionIn May 2010, FredericiaC arranged an international two-phased parallel competition. Thirty six interdisciplinary teams from Denmark and abroad applied for prequalification in June 2010, with six of them being selected for phase 1 of the competition, which ran from September to December 2010, and FredericiaC then picked out four teams for phase 2 – two Danish-based teams and two internationally-based teams. Phase 2 ended with the four teams submitting their final proposals for a development plan on 6 April 2011. The four teams presented their proposals to the citizens of Fredericia on 27 April. Since then, the exhibition of the proposals has been visited by up to 300 people on FredericiaC’s premises. All the proposals have been available for download on the FredericiaC website, www.FredericiaC.dk, where everyone interested could discuss them in the Dialogue Forum.
During the competition, the teams presented their ideas and preliminary proposals to each other, to FredericiaC and citizens and stakeholders. This is a special element in the learning competition, aimed at letting the ongoing dialogue inspire the participating teams and FredericiaC.
That is also the reason that the jury does not appoint only one winning proposal, but awards prizes to the teams in consideration of how strongly their proposals fulfil the visions set out. Based on the results of the competition, FredericiaC will prepare the final development plan itself. This work is expected to be carried out in 2011 and the beginning of 2012. The extent to which consultants will be involved will be determined during the process.
About FredericiaCFredericiaC is a partnership between the Local Authority of Fredericia and Realdania By. FredericiaC aims at developing the former industrial areas between the town centre of Frederica and the sea.

Established by the Local Authority of Fredericia and Realdania By, the partnership FredericiaC P/S stands behind the development.
