Growth for UK Patent and Trade Mark Attorney Firm

International patent and trade mark attorney firm Murgitroyd & Company, headquartered in Glasgow, has announced a move to larger premises for its Newcastle practice and the expansion of its US business development operation.

Murgitroyd & Company will move its Newcastle operation to new larger premises today to accommodate an increase in staff numbers.

The firm has recently added to its Newcastle staff with the arrival of Juliet Scullion, a patent attorney specialising in the field of life sciences and Tom Olbrich, a trainee patent attorney in the field of electronics and software. This brings the staff total in the Newcastle office to 8 and it is anticipated that 2 further staff will join the office in the next 2-month period.

Chairman Ian Murgitroyd commented: “We are pleased that the level of activity in the area has given the firm the confidence to expand what was a small office at the time of its acquisition in 2008 from Kennedys to an office of its current size. The increase in staff numbers is also a sign of our commitment to the area".

Newcastle Director Lucy Johnson added: "I am extremely proud of our achievements in the North East. I believe that our flexibility, commercial awareness and market responsiveness have enabled us to continue to grow in challenging times".

The new premises at 3 Collingwood Street in central Newcastle will provide increased office and meeting space as well as an area where a new programme of breakfast seminars will be hosted. An official launch event for the new office will take place on 7 July 2011.

The firm is also expanding its US business development operation, with the hiring of Dylan Gittleman, a sales professional based on the West Coast in the Silicon Valley area. He will concentrate primarily on increasing sales of the firm’s IP Portal product on the US West Coast.

Murgitroyd & Company’s award-winning IP Portal uses the firm’s global buying power to provide clients with high-quality intellectual property services internationally at a competitive price and via a single point of contact.

Ian Murgitroyd said: “The IP Portal model has been shown to be of particular interest to some of the largest holders of IP portfolios in the US which has resulted in Murgitroyd & Company filing a record number of applications in the past year. We hope to replicate the success that IP Portal has had in terms of sales from our North Carolina office in the West Coast through the appointment of Dylan Gittleman".

Murgitroyd & Company operates from 13 offices internationally (in the UK, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Finland, USA and Japan) and has a total of 230 staff. The firm was founded by Chairman Ian Murgitroyd in 1975, was floated on the AIM in 2001 and has since grown to become one of the largest European providers of intellectual property services.
