DFS at Tannkosh 2011: VFRiCharts app now for Android too
Just in time for the Tannkosh fly-in from 26 to 28 August, the VFRiCharts app from DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung will be available for Android smart phones and tablets as well as iPhones and iPads. Pilots can use this app to determine their current position, heading, altitude and speed while flying. The functions and the display are just like those used in the Apple version that was introduced last year. Tannkosh visitors will have the opportunity to get an up-close look at this new Android app at the DFS booth.
The VFRiCharts app determines the current location of your aircraft via GPS and uses a small airplane icon to display this on the chart. You can also see what your altitude, speed and heading are. Users can choose between different DFS aeronautical charts at the Map Store included in the application. VFRiCharts integrates the Europe Wall Chart (scale: 1:2 000 000) and the ICAO chart of Germany (scale: 1:500 000) as well as charts for all countries bordering Germany. The ICAO chart for the Netherlands is available as are charts of Austria, Belgium, Poland and the Czech Republic from the Visual 500 series (scale 1:500 000). The display of these other maps corresponds to the German ICAO chart so that pilots flying across the border do not need to adapt to a different layout. The basic VFRiCharts app along with the Europe Wall Chart can be downloaded at the Android Market for 1.59 Euro. The ICAO chart of Germany costs 49.99 Euro. Charts for neighbouring countries cost 34.99 Euro each; and a set of charts of European countries is available for 89.99 Euro. The application requires Android Version 2.1 or higher.
